DEUTSCHE WELLE: DOES TRUMP NEED ORBÁN?

US President Donald Trump has met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán several times. He has always seen Orbán as an important partner: a populist fellow who is in the middle of Europe and in NATO. Orbán wants the world to see that he is still important to Trump. But Trump does not seem to need Orbán within the EU, because he is ignoring Europe. At the first pre-peace talks in Saudi Arabia in February, the United States and Russia left out not only Ukraine, but also the Europeans. And if Trump really wants a friend in Europe, there are other candidates these days. Orbán may be the pioneer of illiberal and radical populist policies in modern Europe, but he is no longer the only one. The others are in much more important EU countries: Italy and Germany, for example.
